Weekly Writing

What I found particularly interesting about this week’s classes was when we looked through the files of letters back and forth between Muhlenberg students who fought in World War 2 and their friends and family. I am fascinated by history in a personalized context, so it was very intriguing to read all the letters.

3 points

  • Muhlenberg college hosted a Navy training unit
  • People at home would send their loved ones fighting in the war stationary so they could continue to write
  • The students fighting sent photographs in their letters and write captions on the back explaining them

2 questions

  • Did Muhlenberg students fighting in the war continue to be students and take classes during that time?
  • Was Muhlenberg still acting as a school while it was being used as a training unit?

1 aha moment

  • People back then couldn’t text each other pictures; taking, developing, and sending photographs was a process that may have taken a good amount of time
